WikiLeaks has been clearly one of the most talked topics in the world for the last week.
We can see it on the Twitter trends for words “Wikileaks” and “Assange”.
To be clear I do not support any leakages of condifential materials, but I fully believe that one needs to work on understanding and eliminating causes why they leaked. Currently it seems that biggest power is being put into shooting down the messenger, who is relayng information from some third party source(s).
They are bringing out very well the double standards what are there in the todays world. Something what is unacceptable for some countries, seems to be acceptable to others.
I’m really shocked to see how the governments around the world and US officials have reacted on the leaks and stories around it.
They have all the right to be amused that suchs extent of documents have leaked and about the content of it. If we leave apart the major lobby work done by US Government and asks to spy on X, Y, Z, then from rest of the cables what I have read it seems that the diplomats are good people feeding back information which appears to be fully true if you think closely on matters. Everyone who want’s knows that for example Russia currently is not the most democratic state in the world and that Berlusconi probably does not have very clean background, etc.
What amuses me most is that how American politicians act on it in public. Why some of them have not been prosecuted for it? Calling for execution, assassination or murder in media.
How can representatives of a democratic country do so? I’m sure if I would treat to do something like that to someone then I would be prosecuted for either a threatening the other person or on bad case for planning a murder.
Also a senate Republican leader Mitch McConnel calls to “And he says that if it’s found that Assange hasn’t violated the law, then the law should be changed.“.
Shouldn’t one high politician know that the newly passed legislation does not work against “crimes” done before it came to effect? It’s similar like how Soviet Russia prosecuted people for crimes against the country they were not citizens of.
I’m sure that if any other “not-so democratic” country leaders would have said something like that about people who they don’t like then USA diplomats and European Union members would already be condemning it and calling for actions to improve situation.
In addition the alleged sex crimes. Does anyone believe they happened for real in the current situation? I think their created to reduce the confidence on the people on the actions their doing.
This kind of reaction from officials only makes the other side stronger and stronger. I believe the amount of people following the story so closely would have never been so high if the media and the private companies with stopping support for them would not have caused it to peak so well.
All this unites people to support them and not because they would like WikiLeaks, but because their against the anti-WikiLeaks actions.
Basically with all that we can now clearly say that we have double set of standards, one for the “white world” and one for the others.
I hope that justice will win and WikiLeaks will continue to operate freely, but that they would not get leaks as there’s no one leaking. I know it sounds harsh, especially the second part, but one needs to believe in bright future.
It’s needed to keep the, so much desired, freedom of speech, in the action and not on papers.
